Nation-wide home interviews conducted February 25-26 2006 in 100 residencies in 44 regions. A sample size of 1500 respondents.
It is well known that according to Russian legislation and cultural traditions, a man can marry only one woman. Russia is a country of many religions and the ban on polygamy may be seen by Muslims as nonsensical. Moreover, not all Russian men are addicts of monogamy. If polygamy were legalized in Russia in the near future, how would Russians feel about this idea?
Two-thirds of Russians (62%) would disapprove of legalizing polygamy in our country. The majority of them argue on the basis of moral and national traditions – love and marriage are between only two people (10% of answers), polygamy is against our national mentality and upbringing (8%). It is unacceptable according to religious principles (8%), immoral in general (5%), and a wrong idea (6%). Some respondents appealed to the practical side of the question: in their point of view, Russian men would not manage to support several wives (8% of answers). There was also the opinion that legalizing polygamy would lead to moral decay among men ("men played their wives false anyway, now, they will do it legally"; "men do nothing useful as it is, in this case they will be buried in sloth, smoking pipes"), and that such a form of marriage is disrespectful of women (2% each).
